Old Salem's September: homeschool day, scout day, seed saving, and a seminar

Old Salem's September calendar brings four programs for families and history lovers: a homeschool day, a scout day, a seed-saving workshop, and a seminar on southern paintings and American identity.

Homeschool Day and Scout Day

Friday, Sep 11 is Homeschool Day at Old Salem. Rooted in the Moravian educational philosophy that "all play has purpose," the day invites homeschool families to take learning beyond the classroom for a more personalized museum experience.

Saturday, Sep 12 is Scout Day. Scouts of all ages with Scouting America and Girl Scouts of the USA explore the historic district through history and skill-building activities and earn an Old Salem patch.

Seed Saving 101

Also Saturday, Sep 12, Seed Saving 101 introduces the art and practice of seed saving. Drawing on the stewardship of Old Salem's Historically Authentic Seed Collection, the program covers how plants complete their life cycles, how seeds form, and how gardeners collect, clean, and select seed.

Artistic Liberties seminar

Friday, Sep 18, the Artistic Liberties seminar explores how artists in the colonial and early American period documented a nation in flux — part of the America 250 semiquincentennial commemoration.
